UNIT 4 EXTERNALLY SET ASSIGNMENT
JUNE 2016
THE JOURNEY
Short journeys and long distance travel have provided a source of inspiration for many photographers and film makers. The mode of transport, or places on route, or people travelling have been recorded. Examples of different approchaes can be seen in the work of Lee Friedlander, William Eggleston and Robert Frank. Investigate appropriate examples and make a personal response to a journey of your choice.
Journey: physical, routine, exploration, places, finding out about yourself, repetition, transport
LEE FRIEDLANDERLee Friedlander, born in 1934, began photographing the American social landscape in 1948. With an ability to organize a vast amount of visual information in dynamic compositions, Friedlander has made humorous and poignant images among the chaos of city life, dense landscape and countless other subjects. Friedlander is also recognized for a group of self-portraits he began in the 1960s, reproduced in Self Portrait, an exploration that he turned to again in the late 1990s, and published in a monograph by Fraenkel Gallery in 2000. Friedlander’s work was included in the highly influential 1967 New Documents exhibition, curated by John Szarkowski at the Museum of Modern Art. Included among the many monographs designed and published by Friedlander himself are Sticks and Stones, Lee Friedlander: Photographs, Letters From the People, Apples and Olives, Cherry Blossom Time in Japan, Family, and At Work. In 2005, Friedlander was the recipient of the prestigious Hasselblad Award as well as the subject of a major traveling retrospective and catalog organized by the Museum of Modern Art. In 2010, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York exhibited the entirety of his body of work, America by Car. - source: https://fraenkelgallery.com/artists/lee-friedlander
ROBERT FRANK“The kind of photography I did is gone. It’s old,” he told me without a trace of regret in 2004, when I visited him at his spartan apartment in Bleecker Street, New York, where a single bread roll and a mobile phone the size of a brick sat forlornly on the kitchen table. “There’s no point in it any more for me, and I get no satisfaction from trying to do it. There are too many pictures now. It’s overwhelming. A flood of images that passes by, and says, ‘why should we remember anything?’ There is too much to remember now, too much to take in.” - source: http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2014/nov/07/robert-frank-americans-photography-influence-shadows

Pinterest researchOn pinterest i have found some good work of artists like: Martin Parr, Gary Winogrand, Robert Frank, Daido Moriyama, Bruce Davidson, Lee Friedlander etc.
William Eggleston takes one pictures of an object and moves on onto something else, does not edit his pictures at all. WILLIAM EGGLESTONWilliam Eggleston assumes a neutral gaze and creates his art from commonplace subjects: a farmer's muddy Ford truck, a red ceiling in a friend's house, the contents of his own refrigerator. In his work, Eggleston photographs "democratically"--literally photographing the world around him. His large-format prints monumentalize everyday subjects, everything is equally important; every detail deserves attention.
A native Southerner raised on a cotton plantation in the Mississippi Delta, Eggleston has created a singular portrait of his native South since the late 1960s. After discovering photography in the early 1960s, he abandoned a traditional education and instead learned from photographically illustrated books by Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Robert Frank. Although he began his career making black-and-white images, he soon abandoned them to experiment with color technology to record experiences in more sensual and accurate terms at a time when color photography was largely confined to commercial advertising. In 1976 with the support of John Szarkowski, the influential photography historian, critic, and curator, Eggleston mounted "Color Photographs" a now famous exhibition of his work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. William Eggleston's Guide, in which Szarkowski called Eggleston's photographs "perfect," accompanied this groundbreaking one-person show that established his reputation as a pioneer of color photography. - source: http://www.getty.edu/art/collection/artists/1505/william-eggleston-american-born-1939/ BEN GOLD"BG: I have been taking pictures for a very long time, even before I started studying photography, which was a one year GCSE alongside my A levels at the age of 17. I enjoyed it so much I gave up all my other courses in the second year and left to do a B-tech in photography and later a degree at the University of Brighton.
Early on, I was influenced by great reportage photographers like Sebsastio Salgado, Don McCullin, Henri Cartier Bresson, Bruce Davidson and other members of the Magnum group. A while after moving from London to a small village in Oxfordshire we discovered that our family home used to be owned by 2 founder members of Magnum. This discovery was quite influential and confirmed to me that I was on the right path. Although I was, at this point, unaware or unwilling to accept that I was an artist, I just took pictures. I was, and continue to be inspired by films, not one specific film, just the image on the big screen, big close ups etc, the vast amount of production that goes into them, how any reality can be created, fascinating!" - source: http://www.aestheticamagazine.com/ben-gold/ |

TYPES OF JOURNEYS- Life journey, raising up as a child into an adult, ageing, dying
- learning, education, school, puberty - nature, flowers growing, natural life, no human hand - Architecture, time, modern - History, society, years IDEAWINDOWS & MIRRORSI decided to take picture of my window from inside my bathroom and the three mirrors that I got in my room. What I did is edit my pictures using photoshop, using special paste. I wanted to give an effect of a fantasy, because I stay in my room a lot and like privacy so when I look at the mirror or outside my window I would love to see something else. A journey without leaving my room/ house.

PERSONAL SCRAPBOOK FROM BERLIN
Postcards
Because I am doing journey and I have travelled a lot an idea came to my mind. What if I create postcards from the pictures that I took. I created my postcards using pictures from Poland and England. I wanted my postcards to be on an actual journey so I told random people from my school to write at the back "How the pictures make them feel?" and "Who would they give it to?".
I like the outcome that I received. Not all of the postcards have writing at the back. I wanted to have something more than just postcards, so I looked |
Evaluation for Unit 4
Unit for is my externally set assignment, I was given some themes from which I chose “Journey” - “Short journeys and long distance travel have provided a source of inspiration for many photographers and film makers. The mode of transport, or places on route, or people travelling have been recorded. Examples of different approchaes can be seen in the work of Lee Friedlander, William Eggleston and Robert Frank. Investigate appropriate examples and make a personal response to a journey of your choice.” I chose it because it felt most suitable for me as I started travelling a lot and too my camera to a lot of places.
I started with doing research on journey, looking at different photographers, searching for some inspirations. On there I have found some good work of artists like: Martin Parr, Gary Winogrand, Robert Frank, Daido Moryiama, Bruce Davdson, Lee Friedlander etc. I really liked the way all of these artists work was so simple but yet so interesting with very nice increased, live colours and some of them in black and white and good lighting.
I have decided that the first thing I am gonna do on journey is Photomontages, because I do not like my work being simple I have cut out some photographs from a random architecture catalogue. I have cut them with scalpel, folded them. In some of them I have used my old train tickets to show the evidence of journey.
Next, I went on a journey, taking train to Charing Cross, taking metro to places like Camden Town and London Bridge. Going on trips to galleries like Tate Modern or The National Gallery. I also took some pictures of parts of London that I see everyday. In February I travelled to Berlin on a VMA 4 day trip, took pictures most of stickers and architecture. In April I went to Poland for 2 weeks and took some pictures most of nature.
Berlin have inspired me to create images on Photoshop by editing them, using them for a personal scrapbook that is filled with all of the pictures I took in there. I have created the scrapbook because scrapbooks are most of known for journeys. It let me create cool photoshopped pictures, i have used different methods and learnt a lot of new skills during this exam. It also inspired me by its stickers all around the city. I wanted to bring back the memories from Berlin to my park. I pass through Manor Park almost every single day, I make my journeys to different places with different people. I printed out pictures that I took in Berlin and I stuck them down on random things. Brings memories from a journey.
Poland pictures inspired me to take pictures of the nature and its surroundings, using a lot of macro lense. It is because I was taken to the places where the nature grows by itself, where the humankind did not do anything about it or helped it grow. It made me think that this is a different type of journey, its life and growing by itself, it's a history and a change in an environment. I came to the point where Journey is not just travelling. It is:
- Life journey, raising up as a child into an adult, ageing, dying
- learning, education, school, puberty
- nature, flowers growing, natural life, no human hand
- Architecture, time, modern
- History, society, years
- Personal journey, learning about yourself, keeping things

My final idea was to create postcards, because I realised that I have travelled so much I could have just create a photomontage from the postcards or create a collage, but I did not buy any post cards. So I created my own postcards using pictures from Poland and England. I wanted my postcards to be on an actual journey so I told random people from my school to write at the back "How the pictures make them feel?" and "Who would they give it to?". I like the outcome that I received however not all of the postcards have writing at the back. Because I wanted to have something more than just postcards, so I looked up on internet to looks for some ideas and I found a good idea of hanging a wheel from bike that is filled with postcards. I have used that idea and put the wheels outside, too pictures of them. I think it works well because both of the postcards and wheels been on an actual adventure.
